12 suspects arrested for public violence during protest in Alice

Feb 16, 2019Alice police on Friday arrested 12 suspects after acts of violence, including the stoning of private and police vehicles, during a service delivery protest.”Public Order Police were deployed to quell the violence, open the road illegal blockage and disperse the violent attackers,” said police spokesperson, Captain Khaya Tonjeni.”The situation has since returned to normal and police continue to monitor the throughout.”The twelve suspects – six males and six females, aged between 20-32, were arrested and charged for public violence.”He said that they are expected to appear at the Alice Magistrate’s Court on Monday.Public violence during Alice protest condemnedEastern Cape SAPS Provincial Commissioner, Lt Gen Liziwe Ntshinga, condemned the acts of violence and vandalism of private property including police vehicles.”It cannot be that whenever two parties disagree public violence, infringement of other people’s rights and vandalism is the first option,” she said.”We often receive complaints about lack or absence of police vehicles, anyone who vandalize or damage this rare resource is depriving others of quality service and an enemy of the people.”We encourage police to be vigilant and protect the public and their property from such attacks.”Follow more RNEWS articles, subscribe to our YouTube channel and for breaking news LIKE us on Facebook.
