A memorial service for the former Deputy Chairperson of the Truth and Reconcilation Commission, Doctor Alex Boraine will be held at the Christ Church in Constantia this afternoon. Boraine passed away last week at the age of 87. Dr Alexander Lionel Boraine was born in Cape Town in 1931. He started his career in the Methodist Church at age 19 and in 1970 was appointed the youngest ever President of the Methodist Church of Southern Africa. Four years later he was elected to parliament as a Progressive Party MP. But Boraine is best known as one of the architects of the Truth and Reconcialtion Commission to help South Africans deal with apartheid atrocities. Boraine served as deputy chairman alongside Archbishop Desmond Tutu from 1996 to 1998. Two years later he was awarded the Presidents Medal for Human Rights. In the same year his book, ‘A Country Unmasked’ was published. He was also awarded the Order of the Baobab.
