A police officer is never off duty and when information is received about suspected criminals, it must be immediately followed up to ensure a speedy arrest.
“On Monday, PE Flying Squad members arrested a 36-year-old alleged gang affiliate on charges of murder and attempted murder,” said police spokesperson, Col Priscilla Naidu.
“According to police information, at about 18:00, two off duty members from PE Flying acted on information received about the whereabouts of the suspect.
“With the assistance of Gelvandale Crime Prevention members the house in Old Standford Road in Helenvale was surrounded and when the suspect saw police, he started to run and jump over walls to evade arrest.”
She said that it is alleged that on Sunday, at about 08:50 police attended a shooting at the Glendenning Flats in Schauderville.
“One person, Jermaine Williams (21) was fatally wounded in his chest while two other persons, aged 28 and 23, sustained gunshot wounds to the chest, ankle and hip respectively.”
It is further alleged that the deceased and the two injured persons, affiliated with the China Ah Shene gang, went to Glendenning Flats and approached the suspect, who is affiliated to the Bethelsdorp Spotbouers, over an incident that took place earlier that week.
“The argument turned into a physical brawl resulting in the fatal shooting,” Col Naidu.
“The incident is gang related and is being investigated by the Provincial Gang Investigation Unit.”
The suspect will appear in the Port Elizabeth Magistrate’s Court on Wednesday.
