A shoot out with police ended with one suspect arrested after a business robbery at Kenako Mall, Struandale, in Port Elizabeth.

“At about 08:30 on Saturday, a shop at Kenako Mall, was targeted by five armed suspects. They entered the shop and demanded money,” described police spokesperson, Captain Andre Beetge.

“After taking an undisclosed amount of cash, they also took two CCTV monitors on the premises and the vehicle of the owner, a blue Ford Ranger bakkie.

“They then fled the scene with the bakkie as well as their get away vehicle, a white Toyota Corolla.”

At about 09:00, the Toyota Corolla was spotted by SAPS Flying Squad members in Salamntu Street, Kwazakele, and on approaching the vehicle, four suspects jumped out and fled in different directions.

“One of the suspects fired shots at the police members and the members returned fire. The driver of the vehicle, a 28-year-old male was arrested, but the other three managed to evade arrest,” he added.

“The white Toyota Corolla was searched and an undisclosed amount of cash recovered. Some clothing items of the suspects were also found and confiscated, as well as the two CCTV monitors. The Toyota Corolla, belonging to the driver, was also impounded for forensic testing.”

At about 11:30, the blue Ford Ranger bakkie was discovered abandoned in Meke Street, Zwide, where it was parked in the street.

“No persons were injured in the shooting incident, but it is unknown if any of the suspects that fled were wounded.”

The 28-year-old arrested suspect will appear before the New Brighton Magistrate’s Court on Monday on charges of armed robbery of the business and possession of stolen property.
