A six-year-old patient from George in the Southern Cape has become the recipient of cutting-edge medical cardiac procedure at the Red Cross War Memorial Children’s Hospital in Cape Town. Ruveshni Lewis was born with one heart ventricle, which resulted in her heart not being able to pump oxygen-poor blood back to her lungs. Hospital spokesperson, Dwayne Evans, says a team of specialists implanted a device, meaning that she won’t need to undergo repeat surgery: “Ruveshni is currently stable and recovering well at the Red Cross War Memorial Children’s Hospital in Cape Town following the procedure. In a first of its kind for Africa and only the third globally, she received a (AFR) or Atrial Flow Restricter, which was implanted between one of the heart chambers and the conduit to reduce the window’s size from 10mm to 4mm.”
