A update about the bus robbery from a victim

I, Cathlin Williams got robbed on stock road(between Phillipi & Watergate the 27th of March on the 8am Tygervalley Golden Arrow bus by 5 armed African men(and please, this is not meant for any racial comments). These men got onto the bus as normal passengers. When the bus reached the R300 upturn from Stock Road one of the men just ran to the driver, gunpointed him telling him to stop the bus) . It took them about 10 or 15 minutes to take everyone’s belongings and trust me they took their time! Me, at a near panic attack got slapped by one of these men because i was crying too much and he wanted me to shut up!. These guys had guns one even had a machine-like gun and at one time one of them warned that he was going to shoot but one of the guys stopped him. we were helpless.

After they got their loot and left. the driver drove to the nearest police station(bellville south) so they he could give a statement. So after a while i realised i have an iphone which can be tracked via an app by other users We managed to track my phones exact location and informed one of the detectives, and what did they say? We will look into it .We literally monitored the movement of the phone and informed the police but did they said they were trying to get hold of detectives in phillipi? the police did not follow up a “warm lead”

My family then decided to contact a relative of mine who works for the metro police and told him about this VERY SOLID lead. My cousin who was on duty and other colleagues of his responded immediately and managed to track the location of my phone and ended up at a house with the stolen goods of many other victims, they unfortunately didnt find my phone but managed to get my purse. The speedy action /response of the Metro Police delivered results

Why should people making honest money be in fear of travelling just so they can put food on their table??? The proper security measures should be taken to make sure our people are safe. I AM UPSET, STILL TRAUMATIZED AND SAD. I’m also disappointed in SAPS. A Thank you to the ladies who made us coffee and tea in some way they tried to comfort some of us . unfortunately there was no trauma councelling available to a busload of traumatized people.

  1. This is so sad. thanks for sharing and i hope that you and the other passengers and the driver are doing okay
Did you maybe ask the name of the officer that you reported this to? You should take it further as people just leave the officers and nothing gets done to them they must be brought to book Name and shame them as this is a serious issue neglecting to do your duty but you get your full salary at the end of the month.

  2. This is like deja vu. The very exact thing happened to me when I was travelling on a Claremont bus some 15 years ago. Same scenario – 5 black young guys – I am assuming they probably the same gang…just older and more brazen than ever. They may have been inexperience as they just started the robberies round about that time. I lost all my possession in that robbery but the worse that it was most traumatizing. I can still picture these five holding these what (looked like hand made guns at the time) in my face demanding everything I had on me and also took monies from the driver who I found a little relaxed at the time. He was so calm…the passengers were shocked but the driver didn’t look a bit bothered? The fun started at the Philippi Police station where the policeman at the time took my statement. I will mention this – he was drunk or should I say hang over looking when taking my statement. I felt unsafe in the police station and just my luck I had a officer going my way back to Mitchell’s Plain. Golden Arrow takes responsibility for your loss, the police were more irritated with me enquiring about my case – so I was left feeling robbed and traumatized. An article in the newspaper…and that was it.
