Dec 7, 2018The African National Congress (ANC) in the Eastern Cape said it condemns with disdain the barbaric attack on an 87-year-old struggle veteran and former Member of Parliament, Mamu Nocwaka Lamani.She was attacked by unidentified men at her house at at her Rula Street home in New Brighton, Port Elizabeth, on Tuesday.According to ANC Eastern Cape spokesperson, Judy Mpetsheni, Mamu Lamani sustained serious injuries to her cheeck and body and has been admitted to hospital.”We further appeal to those with information leading to the arrest of these perpetrators to contact the police,” Mpetsheni said.”The ANC will stand against any form of violence and crime against any member of society in particular the elderly and women.”This act of thuggerism should not be tolerated as it undermines public safety and a threat to lives.”We wish her speedy recovery from the assault and that those behind this assault are arrested and brought to book.”Port Elizabeth police appealed for leads Police in Port Elizabeth appealed for help with information that can help them track drown suspects, who allegedly severely assaulted the struggle icon.”At about 12:00, the victim’s caregiver left the house to go buy a few things at the shop,” explained police spokesperson, Captain Andre Beetge.”On her return, at about 12:40, she discovered the 87-year-old victim severely assaulted in her face and body while sleeping in her bed.”It is alleged that the security gate was closed, but not locked and that an unknown number of suspects gained entry into the house and assaulted the victim demanding money.”Capt Beetge said that the woman’s purse, containing an undisclosed amount of cash and bank cards, was then taken by the suspects before they fled from the house.Port Elizabeth reporters robbed while covering the storyPort Elizabeth police have warned residents about driving with valuables in the open after two local reporters, aged 54 and 22, were robbed of their belongings in Rula Street, New Brighton, on Wednesday at about 12:15.”This followed after the 54-year-old male photographer and the 22-year-old female reporter were in that street doing follow up enquiries after the assault and robbery at the home of a 87-year-old woman in the same street on 4 December,” described police spokesperson, Captain Andre Beetge.Follow more RNEWS articles, subscribe to our YouTube channel and for breaking news LIKE us on Facebook.
