Another new South African film set against the background of the old South African Defence Force (SADF) titled, “Canary”, has opened on the local cinema circuit. Director Christiaan Olwagen’s acclaimed and crowned musical drama is an engagingly, extraordinary coming-of-age movie set in the SADF in 1985. It tells the daring story of a small town boy who discovers his true self through the liberating freedom of music. The film is based on true events. The Canaries was the army’s church choir and concert group. Last month saw the release of director, Ferdinand van Zyl’s war drama, “The Recce”, with local heart throb- Greg Kriek in the lead role. The ground breaking flick has been described as a tale of survival, love, duty and sacrifice. It depicts the life of a young Recce, who is wrongfully declared dead behind enemy lines, and who then has to use every resource he has to get home to his distraught family.
