Anti-apartheid activist, Janap Halim, has died in Cape Town today. She is the mother of the former Minister of Environment, Planning and Economic Development in the Western Cape, Tasneem Essop. The ANC in the province says Halim, who was fondly known as Aunty Janie, was a staunch member and supporter of the ANC and the principles of non-racialism and equality. Post 1994 Halim held numerous positions in the ANC in supporting the movement under President Thabo Mbeki. Acting Provincial Chairperson in the Western Cape, Khaya Magaxa, says they are saddened by the news and will support Essop during this difficult time: “We would like to send our sincere condolences to her and her family we hope that at this time of this development we are with her and her pain is our pain in the ANC in the Western Cape.”
