Armed robber shot dead following Easter robbery | Phoenix Sun

An armed robbery suspect was instantly killed while a security officer was seriously wounded during a robbery in Tongaat, over the long Easter weekend.
It is alleged that two unknown suspects ambushed a Hambanati home, where they robbed and shot two residents. They were left critically injured.

The suspects then went on to flee with the stolen items before boarding a train to Maidstone.
It was after the duo allegedly disembarked the train that they spotted an on-duty security officer, with a gun around his waist.
The pair approached the security officer and attempted to rob him of his gun.
Seeing that the security officer was retaliating, the suspects opened fire and shot him multiple times on his chest.
Although the police officer lost his balance and fell to the ground, he returned fire.
It was during the crossfire that one of the suspects was shot dead in the head.

Emergency services were called to the railway line on Walter Reid Road and the security officer was treated at the scene before being transported to a nearby hospital.

The deceased’s accomplice picked up the firearm before fleeing the scene.
Speaking to the Phoenix Sun, communications officer of Tongaat SAPS, Cpt Ngawane confirmed that a case of attempted murder had been opened and police are investigating further.
