ATM card thieves arrested by Port Elizabeth police with money stolen from victim’s account

Apr 25, 2019Suspicious activity at ATM led to arrest of Port Elizabeth ATM card thievesPort Elizabeth – Members of the Mount Road crime prevention unit in Port Elizabeth on Thursday arrested four suspects, between 22 and 28 years old, on charges of possession of suspected stolen property.”At about 08:00, the members acted on information received about suspicious activity at an ATM in Kempston Road and Harrower Road, Port Elizabeth,” said police spokesperson, Capt Sandra Janse Van Rensburg.”On arrival at the filling station, the members were informed that the suspects are in a silver VW Polo and had just left the garage. The vehicle was spotted and was pursued.”She said that in Harrower Road, they pulled the vehicle over and the suspects were taken to the police station for further questioning.”Upon searching the suspects, the members found cash and a bank card not belonging to any of them,” added Capt Janse Van Rensburg.”The members made enquiries with regard to the bank card and established that the bank card was reported stolen and that R1 000 and R4 000 was withdrawn from the account of the complainant.”The complainant did open a case of theft at Ikhamvelihle police station.”ATM card thieves had already withdrawn cash from victim’s accountShe said that the owner of the bank card alleged that he was attempting to withdraw money on Thursday morning when the suspects distracted him and took his bank card.The suspects allegedly later withdrew R5000 from his back account.”The detectives will probe a possible link to other similar cases within Port Elizabeth area,” Capt Janse Van Rensburg said.”The suspects will appear in the Port Elizabeth Magistrate’s Court on Monday on charges of possession of suspected stolen property.”She warned community members to be alert at all times when using ATMs and never accept help from strangers and to keep the pin to bank cards confidential.Follow more RNEWS articles, subscribe to our YouTube channel and for breaking news LIKE us on Facebook.
