KZN police have asked residents to help them find the relatives of a baby that was found abandoned. KZN police spokesman Lieutenant-Colonel Thulani Zwane said detectives from the KwaDukuza family violence unit are urging residents to assist them find the next-of-kin of a one-week-old baby boy who was found on Sunday. According to Zwane, the baby was found abandoned near an unoccupied house on the R74 highway in Maphumulo by a resident who was passing by.“The baby was well-clothed and wrapped in a blanket. “He was taken to hospital for medical attention,” he said.He said a case of child abandonment was opened at the Maphumulo cop shop. “Anyone with information that could assist in the investigation or the next- of-kin should contact Maphumulo police on 032 481 5748, 079 484 5748 or Crime Stop on 08600 10111,” said Zwane.According to a cop from Maphumulo cop shop, the passerby, Sanele Sikhakhane, called them after he discovered the baby.“He was walking along the road when he noticed a loud baby cry coming from an old unoccupied house. “Thinking that a baby’s life could have been in danger, he decided to check what was going on,” said the cop.The cop said upon Sanele’s arrival, he realised that the baby was all by himself and it looked as if he had just been abandoned.“That’s when he decided to call the cops and notify them of his discovery,” said the cop.Daily Sun tried getting hold of Sanele, but his phone was on constant voicemail.
