‘Beware of rapists on social media’ – Verulam SAPS

A case of rape was reported at Verulam SAPS after a 22-year-old woman had been raped while meeting a person she had been chatting to on social media.
It is alleged by the victim that she had been chatting to someone last Tuesday on social media when the person asked her to meet her at around 8:30pm.

While the victim was waiting for the person, an unknown man walked pass the her.
She asked for help, showing the photograph of the person she was meant to meet.
The unknown man agreed to help the victim and they both walked along the road to a bushy area.
He then grabbed the victim using force and raped her. The victim managed to get help and reported the matter to Verulam SAPS who opened a case.

No arrests have been made yet.
Communications officer of Verulam SAPS, Cpt Henry Kisten, said, “We are urging the public to be wary as to who they are chatting to on social media. If they have to meet someone for the first time, they should get all the information they can before the meeting. Meet in a public place, during the day. Do not seek help or transport from strangers, especially when lost. Avoid walking by yourself at night in unlit and lonely areas.”
