Brookdale business robbers arrested following shootout

While five armed suspects were arrested in a shootout shortly after targeting a Brookdale supermarket, police are still working around the clock to arrest three remaining men, who evaded arrest.
The arrested suspects will soon appear in Verulam Magistrate’s Court soon facing charges of attempted murder, robbery and possession of unlicensed firearms.

Provincial police spokeswoman, Col Thembeka Mbhele said, “On November 18 at about 5:15pm, a 41-year-old supermarket owner was at his business premises in Brookdale when he was confronted by eight armed suspects.”
At gunpoint, the suspects robbed him of cash and cigarettes before fleeing the scene on foot.
Police officers from Phoenix responded to a report of the robbery and proceeded to the supermarket.
While the suspects were fleeing, they spotted the police vehicle and opened fire on officers.

“During the shootout, five suspects were arrested while others managed to escape by fleeing on foot. Two firearms, cash and cigarettes were seized by police,” she said.
A police vehicle was damaged due to the gunshots, however, no police officers were injured.
