CABLE THIEVES PUT RESIDENTS’ LIVES ON HOLD

CABLE theft in several parts of Polokwane left many people in the dark over the weekend. Polokwane Municipality said about R13 million had been lost this financial year due to cable theft.Municipal spokesman Thipa Selala said protection infrastructure was stolen at Lota substation over the weekend. The substation supplies power to areas around Flora Park, Founa Park, Serala View, Sterk Park and Thorn Hill. Selala slammed the thieves and called for residents to help catch them. “Ongoing theft and vandalism of municipal infrastructure impacts negatively on the everyday lives of communities and their safety and security. Cable theft is a criminal offence punishable by law. The municipality urges residents to assist with information which could lead to the arrests of those involved.” Selala said although he could not reveal much about the security features installed at the substation, they had bust a few suspects since it was installed. He said cable theft sometimes affected their water supply, which is already under pressure, as it causes pumps to stop working.
