Cape Town Fire and rescue services are evacuating campers and permanent residents of the Kogelbaai resort between Gordon’s Bay and Hangklip due to a vegetation fire. Cape Town law enforcement officials have also evacuated the nearby Sparks Bay day camp. The City has joined fire fighting efforts to contain the vegetation fire that started on New Year’s Day in the Overstrand municipality near Betty’s Bay. Fire and rescue spokesperson Theo Layne says an extensive area is alight along the R44/Clarence drive in the Kogelbaai area. Layne says the fire had spread from the Betty’s Bay area on the upper slopes of the mountain and reached the City’s jurisdictional area this morning. “Currently firefighters from Cape Town are on scene assisted by ground crew of Table Mountain National Parks Staff an 1 Helicopter contracted to TMNP. The Kogelbaai resort is currently being evacuated to ensure the safety of all that are camping at the site. Additional Firefighters will be dispatched as required. The fire is fanned by a very strong South Easterly wind. The mountainous terrain is also affecting access ability to the fire.” (Photo: Greater Overberg FPA)
