Cape Town Mayor Dan Plato says the city will find ways to be less reliant on Eskom to deliver electricity to citizens. Plato has announced a 49-billion-rand budget for public comment. A bulk of the budget is earmarked for operating expenditure. Plato says more than 860 million-rand has been budgeted for Energy and Climate Change programmes. He says the city wants to buy power directly from independent producers and not Eskom. Plato says they are prepared to fight the matter in court if national government block the move. “We are not just waiting for national government to step in. He says, We, as the city, believe we have a major role to play in doing something more progressive. Unfortunately we are busy with maintenance at our Steenbras Plant.”
