Commissioner in the National Planning Commission, Tasneem Essop, says the late Environmental Affairs Minister Edna Molewa provided much needed political leadership in a department with various development challenges. Essop was among speakers at a memorial service held for Molewa at Kirstenbosch in Cape Town. The 61 year old minister died on Saturday after a short illness. A number of people including those who worked with her described Molewa as a Minister who was a hard worker and a committed civil servant. Essop says Molewa’s biggest legacy is managing to put the environmental sector on the political agenda: “If the history of the final global agreement on climate change reached in Paris is written, Minister Molewa’s legacy will be firmly printed in that history. She led the process from Durban to Paris, a strong woman that represented South Africa, but Africa as well and widely the developing countries.” SANPARKS says her work in leading the fight against rhino poaching, cannot be over-emphasised. An official memorial and funeral service is expected to be held next week.
