Verulam SAPS have noted an increase in the number of assault and assault-related cases in their policing district recently.
The increase stems from false counter charges being opened.

Cpt Henry Kisten communications officer of Verulam SAPS, said, “It is alleged that when victims call at the station to report a case of assault against the suspect, the suspect is informed of the charges against him and the suspect then decides to report a case to defend himself.”
During police investigations, it is revealed that some of these counter charges are false cases.

Investigating these false claims uses resources that would better serve the community elsewhere.
He added, “We are therefore advising victims and complainants who are reporting counter charges that if investigations do reveal that the counter charge was falsely open they will be charged for perjury.”
