Defence and Military Veterans Minister, Nosiviwe Mapisa-Nqakula has conducted a keel laying ceremony for the construction of the three inshore patrol vessels for the SA Navy. Project Biro is expected to create hundreds of jobs in Cape Town over the next few years. The project is in line with the government’s Operation Pakisa. Acting spokesperson, Commander Greyling van den Berg, say they are very excited about the project: “These multi-mission inshore patrol vessels will replace our ageing offshore patrol vessels as well as our mine hunting capabilities, these vessels currently in service are all close to 40 years and these new multi mission inshore vessels will be repalacing those existing ships in the next three years.”
