Human rights day is celebrated on the 21st of
March in Mzansi. The United Nations established the human rights based on
issues such as humanity, freedom, justice, and peace. In Mzansi, Human Rights Day is linked historically with the
events of Sharpeville that took place on the 21st of March 1960.On this day, 59 years ago a peaceful protest against pass
laws took place and 69 people were killed and 180 were wounded when police
fired at the protesters. When looked at closely, Human Rights Day goes beyond just a
holiday. It commemorates the innocent lives that were lost.It is quite sad that most people do not know their basic
rights and also cannot tell when they have been violated. It is easy for people to see a holiday such as this as a day
of getting some rest, spending time with family or just as a day away from work.
What people should really be doing besides commemorating the
Sharpville Massacre, is celebrating the breakthrough that we have made in human
rights in our country. While you enjoy a day off from work, take some time to read about Human
Rights Day here: HUMAN RIGHTS DAY.
