TWO men who attempted to rob an e-hailing service driver, and were later linked to a case of carjacking in Wentworth, were arrested by police who were on an intelligence driven brief. The operation led police to the N2 southbound where the men were arrested.
“It is alleged that they requested an e-hailing vehicle and attempted to rob the driver when they were overpowered by other e-hailing drivers. The suspects were taken to hospital for medical attention under police guard. They have been positively linked to a carjacking case that was reported in Wentworth last month,” said provincial SAPS spokesperson, Captain Nqobile Gwala.
The arrests come after officers were tipped off about three men who hijacked a car in Lamontville on Wednesday, 8 January. According to Captain Gwala, the car was recovered and the men were arrested in Umlazi. They were also linked to a number of armed robbery, attempted murder and house robbery cases reported at Umlazi police station.
The operations were led by the Umlazi K9 Unit and eThekwini Inner and Outer South Clusters on Thursday, 9 January. “Police investigations are continuing to link suspects with similar offences. The arrested suspects will appear in the Umlazi and Wentworth Magistrates Courts,” added Captain Gwala.
Provincial Commissioner, Lieutenant-General Khombinkosi Jula commended the police officers for the arrests.
