Environmental group, Save Langebaan Lagoon Action Group, says government’s decision to go ahead with…

Environmental group, Save Langebaan Lagoon Action Group, says government’s decision to go ahead with a fin-fish farming project in the area will be taken on judicial review. It says an internal appeal process with the Fisheries Department has failed over the past two years. The group is opposed to plans to develop a sea-based Aquaculture Development Zone, a kilometre off the Langebaan coastline. Legal Advisor, Jeniffer Kamerman says the project is not sustainable and will have a negative impact on the environment. Kamerman says, “The town of Langebaan has grown up and prospered because of that sensitive marine system. If anything threatens that marine system, it also therefore threatens Langebaan”s booming economy, and that economy is largely predicated on a lively robust tourism and hospitality industry. People decide to come to Langebaan because it’s sitting along the Lagoon.”
