HL: MAYOR HANDS HERSELF OVER
SBHL: TO HAWKS TO FACE CORRUPTION CHARGES
There was drama outside the Durban Commercial Crimes Court shortly after eThekwini mayor Zandile Gumede was granted R50 000 bail. She was accused of a number of corruption related charges and handed herself over to the hawks today. Journalists at the court said the mayor’s supporters prevented them from taking pictures of the mayor and threatened them with violence. Police then told the assembled media that, by order of the court, everyone needed to leave the premises, including the media. Gumede, a staunch ally of former president Jacob Zuma, faced imminent arrest after a lengthy Hawks investigation into allegations of fraud, money-laundering and corruption.
