After news about the decriminalising of dagga broke, I woke up early, gathered my kids around and relayed this message I once read from the book of the Apostle Paul: “Everything is permissible but not everything is beneficiary.”As a father, I know there will be some irresponsible street vendors who will sell dagga to schoolchildren. A father’s role is to get involved in his children’s intellectual, emotional, physical, social and spiritual development. The key is to focus on his child’s strengths utilising the natural assets of a father’s parenting style.Teaching through play draws your children closer to you.Fathers are central to the emotional well-being of their children. We are capable caretakers and disciplinarians. Fathers who make a difference know their role is unique and vital. A father’s presence in the family determines a child’s success and happiness. An active father provides an important foundation for his children and their ongoing security, stability and development.A father’s love is one of the greatest influences on personality development. That is but one of many findings in new research about the power of parental rejection and acceptance in shaping our children’s personalities.“Anyone can be a father, but it takes a real man to be a daddy,” is a well-known saying.A good father makes all the difference to a child’s growth. He’s a pillar of strength, support and discipline. His work is endless and, thankless.Fusi Masedi, Joburg
