MAKONYANE Nthako watched helplessly as his family died in a horrific fire on Sunday. The four members of the family were sleeping in their shack in Thabong, Welkom in the Free State when it caught fire at midnight.Makonyane’s partner Makhabe Mosweu (35) and their two children, Palesa (one) and Bokamoso (three), burned to death while sleeping.Makonyane managed to escape and was rushed to hospital with burn wounds. Neighbours tried to save the family but the flames were too strong. Police spokesman Captain Malebo Khosana said: “An inquest docket was opened and no foul play is suspected.“The woman and her husband were sleeping in the shack with their two kids when it caught fire at about 12.45am. “The shack burnt down completely but the cause of fire is not yet known.” Thabong police commander Brigadier Cynthia Molale said community members must be cautious when using paraffin, candles, cigarettes and other flammable substances.
