Firefighters are battling to contain a large vegetation fire near Napier in the Overberg. The fire started yesterday afternoon. Fire Chief of the Overberg District Municipality, Reynard Geldenhuys says they need to make some progress in fighting the blaze before tonight or else some structures could be under threat if the wind changes direction. “The most important one that we’re busy dealing with right now is just outside Napier on the western side. It’s burning over a large area in thick alien bush. We’ve got a helicopter that’s working here, as well as ground units, a Working on Fire team and land owners and fire teams working here. There’s a medium term threat to property, but there is immediate threat, but it’s something we need to sort out before tonight, before we get the next wind change.) A fire which has been raging in the Franschhoek Valley, for a week, has finally been contained. The fire broke out last Monday and has destroyed more than six-thousand hectares of vegetation. No injuries or damage to property was reported. Cape Winelands District Municipality spokesperson, Jo-Anne Otto, says firefighters will remain on scene throughout the day to monitor hot spots.
