Former Director General in the Presidency Professor Jakes Gerwel’s memory has been brought to life at a commemoration event held in Woodstock in Cape Town. The Jakes Gerwel Foundation and the University of the Western Cape jointly celebrated the life and times of the late academic and business man. Gerwel, who is also a former Vice Chancellor of the University of the Western Cape, has been described as a skilled administrator and a person who cared about the liberation of all South Africans. Artist, Rashid Lombard showcased some of the iconic moments of Gerwel from archived photographs he documented;

“People tend to forget the role of ordinary people of mothers fathers grandfathers that was involved in the struggle and it’s also to bring that memories and to the basics aluta continua, and I think that’s precisely what we are doing now currently with the leadership of our new president Cyril Ramaphosa him being one of them that’s been on the scene of this yeah.”
