Former President Kgalema Motlanthe says policies which are aimed at eradicating drugs across the world have created a global environment where criminalisation fuels social stigma and discrimination. In a statement he says current approaches to dealing with drugs need to be reviewed, in order to rebuild trust between those left behind and the rest of society. He was speaking following his appointment as a member of the Global Commission on Drug Policy. The aim of the commission is to bring informed, evidence-based discussions about humane and effective ways to reduce the harms caused by drugs and drug control policies to an international level. The commission is an independent body comprising 26 members, including 14 former heads of state or government and four Nobel Prize laureates. It is currently chaired by the former President of Switzerland, Ruth Dreifuss
