Former Sactwu CEO, Colleen Khumalo, has appeared in the Cape Town Magistrate’s Court on alleged fraud charges involving R50 million. Hawks spokesperson in the Western Cape, Philani Nkwalase, says the arrest of 51 year old Khumalo follows an investigation into allegations of misappropriation of funds donated by a USA non-profit organisation. The funds were meant to assist in fighting the spread of transmissible diseases by providing health care services to groups and individuals. The initial Hawks investigation led to the arrest last year of a Zimbabwean born US citizen, Dr Alfred Bere for the mismanagement of the donor funding for SACTWU’s Worker Health Programme. Nkwalase says Bere was granted bail of a R100 000, while Khumalo is out on a bail of R20 000. He says their case has been prostponed to the 29th of April for further investigation: “Khumalo is alleged to have submitted fraudulent invioces exceeding R50 million from different companies and NPO’s and the amount is subject to increase. This was done in common cause along with other business entities and persons during the period between 2016 and 2018. The duo appeard together and their case was postponed to 29 April for further invesitigation.”
