Four convicted poachers are expected to be sentenced in the Khayelitsha Regional Court today. Thokozani Gumbi, Zenempilo Kuphe and Gentlemen Moyo were convicted last month for the possession and trafficking of a pangolin. This is in contravention of the National Environmental Management Biodiversity. A fourth accused Obert Mololo was found guilty of possession of a prohibited firearm and ammunition. Hawks spokesperson Philani Nkwalase says the Hawks’ Serious Organised Crime Investigation unit arrested the men in September 2014 at a petrol station along the N1 in Cape Town. The operation was in response to an online pangolin advertisement priced at 250-thousand rand. Nkwalase says a fifth suspect, Alfred Moyo was cleared on all charges. Pangolins are the most trafficked mammals in the world.
