This story has been updated: (The municipality stressed that neither of the two men accompanying the mayor’s son were municipal bodyguards.)
One of the men who was with the mayor’s son and was wounded in last night’s shooting in Ezakheni has passed away in hospital, while the other is in critical condition.
The shooting took place last night (May 21) in Ezakheni E-Section.
Mayor Vincent Madlala’s son, 28-year-old S’boniso Madlala, together with two friends, were shot near the mayor’s home.
It is believed he was caught in a roadside ambush, but managed to drive his way through. Residents from as far away as St Chad’s and Steadville have reported hearing the deadly exchange of gunfire.
S’boniso managed to get to his father, who rushed him into Ladysmith. He had been shot multiple times.
In a mad rush, his father sped towards Ladysmith to a waiting ambulance at Ladysmith police station. However, it was too late and S’boniso was declared dead by paramedics.
Our condolences go out to the families of the deceased.
