UNIVERSITY of KZN students at the Westville campus allegedly broke windows and burned lecture rooms yesterday. They claimed their demands had not been met. SRC member Wiseman Mdakane said although most of their issues were resolved, there were still outstanding matters. “Most NSFAS issues were dealt with but students were unhappy with issues in connection with residences, admission and academic exclusion.” Wiseman said living conditions at most student residences were terrible. He said they have been raising the matter for some time but the university hadn’t done much about it and the SRC would meet complaining students. University spokeswoman Normah Zondo said protesting students disrupted the academic programme at Westville campus yesterday. “Protesters committed acts of arson, causing damage to property. One student was injured and received medical attention. “The protest was led by EFF students, who raised grievances outside of the discussion and formal agreement after being part of all discussions.” She said the university won’t tolerate criminal behaviour or intimidation. Captain Nqobile Gwala said students embarked on protest action at Westville campus yesterday. “They set alight a quad bike and a motor bike. “A building was burnt and windows damaged.
