George in the Southern Cape is enveloped by smoke and ash as veld fires continue high above the Outeniqua mountain range. The fires started earlier this week in Herold. The local municipality says several fire-fighting agencies have been working together to bring it under control. At this stage, the fire poses no threat to people or infrastructure. Municipality spokesperson, Chantel Edwards Klose: “The Herold Veldfire remains active. Favourable weather conditions are in place and a back burn will be implemented today from the railway line up the mountain. Resources have been allocated and ground teams are in place to monitor. Aerial support will be sent in as soon as the weather allows. The public is urgently requested to refrain from recreational hiking today on any unofficial hiking trails through plantations.”
