Greening the environment. What better way to start than on National Garden Day. One young person who’s already at it, is a 10 year old Cape Town boy. Gardening is Johan Coetzer’s passion. Over weekends he can be found tending a neat green space. With his parents’ help, this fourth grader has already established a herb and vegetable patch. Succulents are his favourite. Professor Nox Makunga, a botanist at Stellenbosch University says Johan is on the right track. “Here in South Africa, we have a wonderful succulent biodiversity and the succulent Karoo is regarded as a biodiversity hot spot. So if you are planting succulents, particularly, you are planting plants that are water wise. Both Professor Makunga and Johan encourage proper research for best results when starting a garden.
