Provincial police spokeswoman, Col Thembeka Mbhele said that in October 2018, a group of men were having a party at a local liquor outlet on Xolani Road at the hostel when they were approached by four men, who pretended to be patrons.
“When they were informed that the liquor outlet was out of stock, they withdrew firearms, fired gunshots and robbed the patrons of cellphones and cash. Bonginkosi Biyela (29) and Sibonelo Mbanjwa (33) were fatally wounded. Four victims were wounded and taken to hospital for medical attention,” she explained.
The perpetrators fled the scene on foot. “Cases of murder, attempted murder and armed robbery were opened at the KwaMashu police station for investigation,” added Col Mbhele.
Subsequently on the same day, police were conducting an operation along Mzilikazi Road when they stopped and searched two men, Gumede and Mthiyane.

They recovered two pistols, four cellphones and a tablet in their possessions.
They were then arrested. Intensive investigations including the ballistic report on the recovered firearms positively linked them to the murder.
