It is estimated that about 30 houses have burnt down at the historic Morovian Mission Station of Wupperthal outside Clanwilliam in the Cape West Coast District. Municipal Fire and Rescue Services assisted by neighbouring municipalities are trying to bring the inferno under control that has destroyed the town hall and a school among others. Ambulance services have been deployed in the area. At this stage it is not yet clear how the fire started. Wupperthal was established in 1830’s by German missionaries.

  2. Lord, bring your favor upon all those that has been affected by die fire – that they will have the financial means to rebuild a life.

  3. John Bartlett… I’ve seen you put a laughing face to a lot of comments which refers to prayer going out for this community. What is so funny or don’t you believe in prayer???

  4. Latest update: clamwilliam resources :1 x pumper , 1 x water tanker, Moorreesburg- 1x pumper, piketberg 1x pumper, 1 x vredenburg- 1x skidunit, 1x malmusbury water tanker. The estimated structures now affected is 45 and estimated ppl affected is 200. Places burnt down is clinic, townhall. Resources was requested from Cederberg Municipality. Other municipalities was stood down as their resources could not be actioned (matzikama and bergrivier). Ems was placed on standby and one rescue and 2 ambulances in the wuppertal area. They will be avail through the night. Unconfirmed reports of ppl that were hurt / burnt – but EMS assessing. The comms are down in area so information is coming through very slow. Much of the ppl affected are pensioners and there is a need for medication. This has been communicated to EMS as well. Request has been submitted for the aerial response which will be done via province and will take pictures to see estimate of the damage. If the fire is still burning in morning bomber will be sent up. Humanitarian assistance has been requested in terms of food, blankets and possible assitance with lodging or tents. At the moment unconfirmed fire started at a residence and thatched roof caught alight. Assistance would also be needed from Disaster Medicine- Dr Wayne Smith to perhaps advise how medication could be dispensed to old age residents as they are in the majority affected. Some relief were dispatched from West Coast to emergency personnel. Franquin Petersen
