Rising star, Nikiwe Yika.
Nikiwe Yika, a 21-year-old aspiring performing artist from KwaMashu, has jetted off to New York to attend film workshops.
Yika, who is well on her way to being a world-class actress ,attended a one-year performing arts mentorship programme at Ekhaya Multi-arts Centre, after matriculating in 2015. It was at the centre that herlove for acting intensified.
“It is an awesome feeling as I am portraying a character that is totally different from me applying techniques that I have learned. It is hard work as you need to be able to tap in and out of character,” the aspiring actress said.
After merely two years of completing her one-year performing arts mentorship programme at the centre, Yika was scouted by talent agency directors, Elsubie Verlinden and Elouise Janse Van Renzburg, during auditions in Kloof, last October.

“After weeks of excruciating patience, I finally received a call back from the audition to showcase in front of international talent scout Kim Myers in Johannesburg at Silver Star Casino last year,” she said.
She explained that Ravhyn Drummer from Tyler Perry Studios, along with Nathan Butler, winner of the Voice USA were in the room.
“Just like that, I was among the South Africans chosen to perform at the Applause Rising Talent Showcase that happens yearly,” she said with a twinkle in her eye.
Yika departed to New York on June 30. She will be attending film workshops at the prestigious New York Film Academy and performing in front of agents, casting directors and production houses.
“I am so grateful for this opportunity as it is not only for me but for everyone I will come across. This opportunity will allow me to sow back into our economy and afford people who are interested in a break,” she concluded.
