A 41-year-old man, accused of rape, faced the full might of the law after he was sentenced to life imprisonment for the heinous crime in the Verulam Magistrates Court, recently.
The crime was committed in Tongaat in 2015.
The 29-year-old victim alleged that on Thursday, November 26, 2015, at about 2pm, she was waiting for a taxi to go to Tongaat CBD, near Golden Dawn Drive, on the M4.

While waiting, the accused approached her and asked for R5. She told him that she does not have money. The accused then tried to grab her handbag and she pulled it away.
The accused then grabbed the victim by the neck and pulled her into the bush.
He threatened to kill her if she did not comply with his instructions. He then undressed the victim and himself and raped her twice without protection.
The accused thereafter robbed her of her cellphone, cash and jewellery, all to the value of R1, 800. After taking all these items, he fled the scene.
A case of rape was opened at Tongaat SAPS and given to the FCS unit for investigation. Due to the fact that the accused could not be located, the docket was closed in 2016.

However, the investigating officer did not give up and continued making enquiries on the whereabouts of the accused. In 2018, the accused was found in the Montobela area.
The victim was taken to the place where she pointed out the accused as the person, who raped her. The accused applied for bail and his application was denied.

In June 2019, the matter was set down for trial and after evidence was led, the accused was convicted and sentenced. The man was also jailed for 15 years for robbery.
The public prosecutor thanked the investigating officer, Sgt Kunene for all his hard work and excellent investigations.
The acting branch commander, Cpt H Naidoo, thanked the investigating officer for his commitment and dedication to his duties.
