After evading arrest for more than a year, the luck of a 35-year-old man, accused of a murder at the KwaMashu Hostel, finally ran out when he was sentenced to life imprisonment in the Verulam Regional Court, last week.
Vusi Nyoka Mhlongo was found guilty of murder and received an additional five years imprisonment for attempted murder during the court’s verdict.

Provincial police spokeswoman, Col Thembeka Mbhele said that on October 23, 2017, the accused fatally shot Sithembiso Maduna (22) and injured another man on Musa Road in the KwaMashu Hostel.
“The victims and the accused had an argument while having a conversation at the premises. The accused left and later returned with a firearm,” she explained.
Mhlongo fired shots and Maduna, wounded another male and fled the scene on foot.
“The deceased sustained gunshot wounds to the head and chest,” added Col Mbhele.
Following this, cases of murder and attempted murder were opened at the KwaMashu police station for investigation.

Police probed the crime and this led to the arrest of the wanted murderer. “He was charged and taken to court where he was tried.
He was sentenced on April 17, 2019,” she concluded.
