Phoenix SAPS is warning the community to be vigilant of interacting with strangers on social media. This comes after an incident of extortion through WhatsApp.
It is alleged by the complainant that during mid-January, he came in contact with a woman via online dating.

The complainant and the said lady communicated via WhatsApp and never met in him person.
The two exchanged pornographic photographs of each other. The female, after some time had passed, threatened to expose the complainant’s pictures on social media to his family and friends if he did not pay her and amount of R1, 000.

The complainant then blocked the said woman’s number and had no further contact with her. He then reported a case of extortion against the suspect.
Cpt Louise Naidoo, communications officer of Phoenix SAPS, said, “In December 2018 and prior, articles were published in the newspapers warning the community about falling prey to such scams. We appeal to the public at large to please read and adhere to the warnings.”
