Man shot in suspected botched hijacking

Hijackings have been plaguing areas of Verulam, Tongaat and Phoenix in recent weeks.
In the latest incident, a 39-year-old man is lucky to be alive after he was shot during a suspected botched hijacking on Cedar Close in Trenance Park, Verulam.
The victim is recovering in hospital in a serious condition after the incident on Thursday morning.

It is alleged that the victim had left home at 5:30am in his blue Toyota Corolla to go to work as he does each day.
However, as he approached the entrance of Cedar Close on this morning, he was shot through his window by a suspect standing on the roadside.
The armed assailant and his accomplice then fled the scene without taking the vehicle. The victim sustained a single gunshot wound to his abdomen which exited through his left thigh.
Members of a local security company were called out to the scene by a member of public requesting assistance for the victim.
Upon arrival, the man was found to have sustained a single gunshot wound. He was stabilised on scene before being rushed to hospital by ambulance in a serious but stable condition.
Security officers conducted an extensive search for the suspects, however, no arrests were made.

The intent of the suspects is unclear but at this stage it is believed to be a hijacking gone wrong.
Communications officer of Verulam SAPS, Cpt Henry Kisten, confirmed the incident and said it is currently being investigated by Verulam SAPS who are working tirelessly to find those responsible for the violent attack.

The suspects are at this stage unknown. No arrests have been made yet.
“Hijackings have been a scourge to our community. The SAPS has published a number of safety tips in the local media in recent weeks in light of these incidents. Members of the public are asked to remain vigilant and aware of their surroundings at all times. Do not let criminals catch you unaware,” he said.
