Management at Robben Island Museum says the overwhelming response to their free trips on…

Management at Robben Island Museum says the overwhelming response to their free trips on Heritage Day to the world heritage site has been a lesson learnt for organising future events. Scores of people people from all over the country registered for the free event. Long queues were formed at Nelson Mandela Gateway this morning with visitors hoping to catch a ferry but some were turned away. Spokesperson for the Robben Island Museum, Morongoa Ramaboa, says they apologise for the inconvenience and hope people can visit the island in the future. She says, “It was an overwhelming response by South Africans across the board that came and wanted to visit Robben Island Museum and they only had one day to do so. So, this is a clear indication that there is a need to open this up more. Unfortunately, per day, we can only accommodate a set number of people and because of the excess number that showed up today, some of them sadly have to go back home without having visited Robben Island Museum”.

  1. What if we as South African citizens get charged less than tourist… Then you don’t have to have ‘free days’, since we will be able to afford to see our own countries heritage sites.

  2. The lesson here is that most South Africans would love to learn more about their own heritage sites if it wasnt so ridiculously priced. So I agree that the pricing could be structured differently even if its on a few days of the month where we can book in advance which would avoid the issue where people are turned away. On the plus side, well done on this initiative on heritage day. It was a good idea. And now opens the conversation around South Africans getting affordable options to visit our own country

  3. Why not do the same as Table Mountain? On your birthday they allow you a free trip up the cable car. All you have to do is present your S.A. ID to them and voila! You get a free trip up the mountain.
