Mayor awards top Phoenix pupil

About 75 schools from around the eThekwini Municipality were honoured for the excellent results produced for the 2018 academic year.
The awards ceremony was hosted at the Inkosi Albert Luthuli International Convention Centre on Friday.
Congratulating the pupils, mayor, Cllr Zandile Gumede said the schools had contributed immensely to the 78.2 percent pass rate achieved.
“We are proud of your achievements. Our government is serious about education because it remains the only hope we have for the complete liberation of a young mind. Education plays an important role in equalising individuals’ life chances, promoting economic mobility, eradicating poverty and reducing inequality,” she said.

Echoing the mayor’s sentiments, MEC of Co-Operative Governance and Traditional Affairs, Nomusa Dube, also congratulated the teachers for their sterling work.
“Teaching is not a profession, but a calling. We know that in the classroom you face a lot of challenges and we applaud you for your perseverance,” she said. Dube-Ncube emphasised that the completion of the secondary phase of schooling was not the end, but the beginning of a new chapter in a person’s life. “You are our future and we have great expectations from you. Do not lose focus, continue to shine and reach for your dreams,” Dube-Ncube said.
The categories included schools that improved their 2018 matric pass rate by more than 30 percent, schools that obtained 100 percent matric pass rate, top 10 pupils from the eThekwini district and top 10 pupils from disadvantaged schools.
Awards included bursaries, trophies and other essential education tools that were given to pupils who had excelled. Among the top 10 pupils who excelled in the district was Greenbury Secondary pupil, Teniel Gabrielle Gerald.
