Two men, tourists from Germany, were walking during the early hours of the morning of 14 March 2019 down Gie Road in Table View, when they were stopped by Table View Police and a Table View Neighbourhood Watch member, who warned the men that this is a hot spot area for robberies and that they need to be cautious walking to their destination. The men then informed the officer that they had met two women at a pub earlier the evening and took them to their place of accommodation in Big Bay.
During the visit, one of the men noticed that his cell phone was missing, they searched for it, but could not find it. After a while one of the women said that she had to go home, and the men accompanied both women to a complex in Gie Road, Table View. The men waited outside for the women, who never returned. This was when the men were approached by the officer and neighbourhood watch member.
During the interview a silver in colour Toyota Yaris drove out of the complex and the men shouted that the two women were in that vehicle. The vehicle sped off when they saw the officer. The information about the suspects and the vehicle they were driving were communicated with other police officers and neighbourhood watch members.
The vehicle was observed on the corners of Blaauwberg- and Koeberg Road and the driver was instructed to stop.
There were six occupants, the officer introduced himself and informed them why the vehicle was stopped. The complainant arrived with the other officer and identified the two women who were with he and his friend earlier, and allegedly took his cell phone.
The vehicle and the occupants were searched and the officers found the cell phone in the possession of one of the men. During their search, they also discovered a box containing ammunition. No one took ownership of the ammunition and all six were arrested. The three men and three women were taken to Table View Police Station.
