“Join Bands Not Gangs” will handover R60k worth of music instruments to the youth of Masibambane on Madiba’s birthday. This event marks its second milestone since it launched its mission in 2018 ‘to gift 1 million music instruments into the hands of 1 million South African youth’. Karien de Waal, Founder of #JBNG says, “We are on track with our 2019 goal of doubling our instruments to support youth of the Kraaifontein area, which is one of South Africa’s highest crime areas.” #JBNG launched its pilot in Scottsdene in Q3 2019 to encourage youth to learn a musical instrument & channel their energy in more constructive creative directions than to endanger their lives in gangs. Scottsdene, which
forms part of the Kraaifontein region, rated 7th in the SAPS’ list of highest murder rates in the country for 2017/2018. Masibambane High School falls in the same region and is 4 kilometres away from the Scottsdene pilot. Karien says that over the last year, #JBNG has given the Scottsdene youth a fresh future outlook with better job prospects, especially in the rising creative economy. One learner was awarded a scholarship to train professionally in music and some have already performed on stage with accomplished local musicians.
