Members of the Social Justice Coalition (SJC) have gathered outside the Cape Town Magistrate’s court where its secretary-general is expected to appear today. Axolile Notywala was arrested at the Civic Centre last week when the SJC was protesting to highlight issues such as a lack of basic services and water in the poor communities in Cape Town. The SJC’s Axolile Notywala was arrested and charged with contravening the Regulation of Gatherings Act. He says however, that the SJC was protesting peacefully when police forcefully removed them from the steps of the Civic Centre where they were waiting for Mayor Dan Plato to address them. He says elderly people who were part of the protest, were also pushed roughly from the steps. Notywala also says that he was never informed of his rights or why he was being charged until two hours later at Cape Town police station.
