Minister of Arts and Culture, Nathi Mthethwa, has instituted an independent investigation into the management of the Robben Island Museum. This follows allegations of maladministration and nepotism by the Ex- Political Prisoners Association. The EPPA, which represents about a thousand -500 former political prisoners on the island, threatened to embark on a hunger strike if their plight is ignored. The museum lodged counter allegations against the EPPA. Spokesperson for the Arts and Culture Ministry, Asanda Magaqa, says the investigation is still in it’s early stages. “The Investigation has commenced as of immediately where we are currently is of the initial stage which would include the appointment of the investigators who must undertake this probe. In due course we will advise including on the terms of reference of this investigation and to also the duration as well as when the outcome is likely.”
