UMKHONTO weSizwe Military Veterans Association members have threatened to take action against Msunduzi Municipality. This is after it emerged that millions of rands meant for building houses for military veterans have not been used. This was revealed during the meeting of the finance committee of the municipality on Wednesday at the council chambers. Officials were asked to explain how they had spent money for programmes in the budget. Councillors learned with shock that R8,5 million meant for houses for the veterans had not been used. The 2018/2019 financial year ends in June and according to officials, they do not have the capacity to spend the money.Councillor Sandile Ngubane questioned why officials were unable to use the money to ensure that veterans had houses. Committee members said this was a sign that officials were not planning properly. Disappointed Menzi Mkhize, Military Veterans Association Moses Mabhida regional secretary, said: “I find this irritating. It shows the disregard for veterans by municipal officials. “Most veterans die without tasting the fruits of the freedom they fought so hard for. That is why we cannot take it lying down.”Mkhize said there would be a meeting to discuss the matter but did not say when it would be held.
