More than 600 firefighters attached to the Department of Environmental Affairs’ Working on Fire program in the Western Cape will undergo a training camp for a week at the end of the month in preparation for the upcoming fire season. The firefighters are stationed at 27 bases across the province. Working on Fire spokesperson, Lauren Howard says the assessment includes physical activities such as the 2.4 km run in under 12 minutes for men and 14 minutes for women, 40 push ups and sit ups in one minute, 7 pull ups and as a team building excise, they will complete a 10km route march. The firefighters are also assessed on their knowledge of fire behaviour, fire watch outs, fire line safety principals, as well as fire line equipment and the use thereof.
